Cats of Oía
Oía on Santorini is better known for its sunsets and the white houses that nestle defiantly against the steep cliffs. However, the street cats are also omnipresent here.
Interestingly, the cats here are not only fed by well-meaning tourists who give them treats or stroke them, but there is also an organised feeding. Once a day, the cats gather in a special place, hidden in a narrow side street away from the crowds of tourists. There, a group of dedicated locals take care of feeding the animals regularly, ensuring that they stay healthy and well-fed. This gesture demonstrates a respect for the animals that goes beyond mere toleration.
The cats of Oía are now almost a small attraction in their own right. Visitors are often amazed to see how these animals have their own rhythm and seem to live in harmony with the hustle and bustle of the town. They add another facet to the already picturesque Oía, a lively and loving detail that many tourists remember. The street cats here act like little guardians of the town, moving unimpressed between locals and travellers and contributing to the character of this unique place in their unobtrusive way.
